Bloodshot made his first appearance in the earlier days of Valiant with a cameo in Eternal Warriors #4 and his first full appearance in Rai #0. During testing as part of Project Rising Spirit (founded by Hideyoshi Iwatsu), Mortalli was injected with the “Blood of Heroes,” a nanite formula that gave him incredible powers of regeneration and combat. The codename was originally given Angelo Mortalli, a mobster forced to become a test subject after being sold out by his cronies.

While Bloodshot feels a strong connection to his "Raymond" life, its speculated both his military and mobster lives are just two of the many "memories" implanted in his head, provoking some unanswered questions about his history.Like many comics characters, Bloodshot has more than one origin story.

Killed in a terrorist attack trying to protect his family, his body was donated by the military to Project Rising Spirit, this time a government agency, who imbued him with nanotechnology and resurrected him. Cutting a deal with the FBI to act against the Mob, Angelo's old boss catches wind of his betrayal and is eventually roped into a Japanese program named Musashi Labs, better known as Project Rising Spirit, who specializes in experimental weaponry.

Created by Kevin VanHook, Bob Layton, and Don Perlin, he was initially a mobster making his way through the ranks until he's framed for the murder of a rival gangster due to him being disloyal to the boss's daughter. Bloodshot's mythos has had a culmination of many writers and artist since his inception, but his introduction came as a cameo in 1992's Eternal Warrior #4, before making his full appearance in Rai #0.
